Have you ever been asked if you are among the numbered to be saved? Some faith traditions believe in a limited QUOTA of those who will enter into heaven. But thankfully Jesus does not respond in today’s Gospel that it is necessary to reach a certain degree of special holiness to enter heaven; rather, Jesus seems to ignore any number reference but is careful to explain that heaven is not for a chosen few but for EVERYONE. However, Jesus is clear to say that no one should assume he or she is saved simply because of race, position, or any other privilege they may feel they have. It is necessary to strive for salvation, to work for it.
What does that mean for us? We are from all different parts of the world. Some of us come from many generations of Christians, true; we could think we have a right to heaven for the simply reason that our grandparents or greatgrands were Christians. Jesus says that salvation depends on our personal efforts, we cannot sit idle. Others of us have more recently joined the Christian tradition; we are also on equal status. In salvation, all our brothers and sisters enter; we are ALL children of God. To the extent that we exclude someone, we are excluding ourselves. It is not that God is closing the gate. It is that we cannot go through it alone. We close it if we refuse to be brothers and sisters to all.

¿Alguna vez te han preguntado si estás entre los contados para ser salvado? Algunas tradiciones religiosas creen en una CUOTA limitada de aquellos que entrarán en el cielo. ¿Qué significa eso para nosotros? Somos de todas partes del mundo. Algunos de nosotros venimos de muchas generaciones de cristianos, cierto; Podríamos pensar que tenemos derecho al cielo por la sencilla razón de que nuestros abuelos o bisabuelos eran cristianos. Jesús dice que la salvación depende de nuestros esfuerzos personales, no podemos quedarnos ociosos. Otros de nosotros nos hemos unido más recientemente a la tradición cristiana; También estamos en igualdad de condiciones. En la salvación, todos nuestros hermanos y hermanas entran; Todos somos hijos de Dios. En la medida en que excluimos a alguien, nos estamos excluyendo a nosotros mismos. No es que Dios esté cerrando la puerta. Es que no podemos atravesarlo solos. Lo cerramos si nos negamos a ser hermanos y hermanas para todos.
