As children, most of us were taught the difference between good and bad, what could and could not be done; and some of us have remained there, always waiting for someone to tell us what we must do. But being a Christian is not to have found a refuge where we can shelter ourselves from the pains and troubles of family life and work.
Instead, being a Christian is a call to grow as a person, to mature, to be responsible, make our own decisions, and take risks…to live in freedom. God’s plan is for us to be free. Jesus invites us to rid ourselves of all the ties that might enslave us. A tie can be a fear, not feeling worthy or valuable enough to defend our dignity. A tie can also be a dependency on what others say or do, or on what they have. A tie can be a bad habit, an addiction, or it can be a job that does not allow time for family.
To bear our cross means to accept our wounds and limitations, the mistakes of the past. To bear the cross means to accept the small sacrifices we must make every day, so that others can have a more abundant and full life. To carry the cross means to face any pain and hang on to hope in God. It is not denying the suffering that comes into life but to walk trusting that God has promised us freedom. To be Christian is to learn to be free; it is to discover each day that we are children of God and brothers and sisters of everyone. Do we live that conviction?

De niños, a la mayoría de nosotros se nos enseñó la diferencia entre lo bueno y lo malo, lo que podía y no podía hacerse; y algunos de nosotros nos hemos quedado allí, siempre esperando que alguien nos diga qué debemos hacer. Pero ser cristiano no es haber encontrado un refugio donde podamos refugiarnos de los dolores y problemas de la vida y el trabajo familiar.
En cambio, ser cristiano es un llamado a crecer como persona, a madurar, a ser responsable, a tomar nuestras propias decisiones y a tomar riesgos... para vivir en libertad. El plan de Dios es que seamos libres. Jesús nos invita a librarnos de todos los lazos que podrían esclavizarnos. Un lazo puede ser un miedo, no sentirse digno o lo suficientemente valioso como para defender nuestra dignidad. Un empate también puede depender de lo que otros dicen o hacen, o de lo que tienen. Un lazo puede ser un mal hábito, y la adicción, o puede ser un trabajo que no da tiempo para la familia.
Llevar nuestra cruz significa aceptar nuestras heridas y limitaciones, los errores del pasado. Llevar la cruz significa aceptar los pequeños sacrificios que debemos hacer todos los días, para que otros puedan tener una vida más abundante y plena. cargar la cruz significa enfrentar cualquier dolor y aferrarse a la esperanza en Dios. No es negar el sufrimiento que viene a la vida, sino caminar confiando en que Dios nos ha prometido libertad. Ser cristiano es aprender a ser libre; es descubrir cada día que somos hijos de Dios y hermanos y hermanas de todos. ¿Vivimos esa convicción?
