Did you ever notice that children often have a very strong sense of whom they can trust? It is like a simple way of seeing that immediately perceives the goodness in others. Children have not yet been affected by resentments or the lack of trust of adults and, therefore, they can see much more clearly. Neither do they have any fear of having someone better or more important than them. They readily see the truth and the simplicity of kindness.
John the Baptist was an adult, and he could have mistrusted Jesus. And yet, with the certainty of innocence and a clean heart, he recognizes the Lamb of God in the person of Jesus. The Lamb is the guarantee that God gives us of salvation and liberation. He is the perfect sacrifice who gives life to all. We need to recognize him, and for that we need a clean heart.
Jesus comes to us through the people near us. He will come in the goodness that we will recognize without jealousy or resentment; he will come in those people who give of themselves and sacrifice for us; he will come in the efforts for justice, in the work of those who struggle to achieve a just immigration reform, in the efforts of those who educate in schools and in catechesis, and in those who heal and take care of the health of others. He will come in the wise words of the elderly among us, and ABOVE ALL, he will come in the Eucharist, the bread of life given to us as our food and through which we become his Body.

¿Alguna vez han notado que los niños a menudo tienen un sentido muy fuerte de en quién pueden confiar? Es como una forma sencilla de ver que inmediatamente percibe la bondad en los demás. Los niños aún no se han visto afectados por los resentimientos o la falta de confianza de los adultos y, por lo tanto, pueden ver más claramente. Tampoco tienen miedo de tener a alguien mejor o más importante que ellos. Ellos ven fácilmente la verdad y la simplicidad de la bondad.
Juan el Bautista era un adulto, y podría haber desconfiado de Jesús, y sin embargo, con la certeza de la inocencia y un corazón limpio, reconoce al Cordero de Dios en la persona de Jesús. El Cordero es la garantía que Dios nos da de salvación y liberación. Es el sacrificio perfecto que da vida a todos. Necesitamos reconocerlo y para eso necesitamos un corazón limpio.
Jesús viene a través de las personas cercanas a nosotros. Vendrá en la bondad que podremos reconocer sin celos ni resentimientos; vendrá en aquellas personas que se entregan a sí mismas y se sacrifican por nosotros; vendrá en los esfuerzos por la justicia, en el trabajo de aquellos que luchan por lograr una reforma migratoria justa, en los esfuerzos de aquellos que educan en las escuelas y en la catequesis, y en aquellos que sanan y cuidan la salud de los demás. Vendrá en las sabias palabras de los ancianos entre nosotros, y por encima de todo, vendrá en la Eucaristía, el pan de vida que se nos da como nuestro alimento y a través del cual nos convertimos en su Cuerpo.
