The origin of the Catholic papacy is indicated in today’s Gospel story from Ma!hew 16:13-20. Jesus says to Peter: “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” Peter becomes the first Pope to lead the rest of apostles after Pentecost, and begin preaching the message of love far and wide.
Yes, this is the same Peter who began sinking when he was walking to Jesus on the sea, and when his faith faltered. Yes, it is the same Peter to whom Jesus said, “Get behind me, Satan”, when Jesus predicted he would suffer and be put to death, and Peter wanted to deny that. Yes, it is the same Peter, who denied Jesus himself not once, but three times during the days leading up to Jesus’s crucifixion.
What might this Gospel have to teach us? Peter, who was a very human person, with weaknesses and faults, sins and misjudgments, was chosen by Jesus, I believe, to let us know that each of us is capable, WITH THE GRACE OF GOD, to proclaim the good news that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of living God.” That is what Peter answered when Jesus asked: “But who do YOU say that I am?”
We all can be transformed when we are willing to change for the be!er, to draw closer to God in our daily lives. But it is the power of God that allows us to this conversion. Let us be grateful for the Spirit's work within us.

El origen del papado católico se indica en la historia del Evangelio de hoy de Mateo 16: 13-20. Jesús le dice a Pedro: "Tú eres Pedro, y sobre esta roca edificaré mi Iglesia, y las puertas del inframundo no prevalecerán contra ella". Peter se convierte en el primer Papa en liderar al resto de los apóstoles después de Pentecostés, y comienza a predicar el mensaje de amor por todas partes.
Sí, este es el mismo Pedro que comenzó a hundirse cuando caminaba hacia Jesús en el mar, y cuando su fe vaciló. Sí, es el mismo Pedro a quien Jesús dijo: "Apártate de mí, Satanás", cuando Jesús predijo sufriría y sería ejecutado, y Peter quería negar eso ... Sí, es el mismo Peter, quien negó a Jesús mismo no una vez, sino tres veces durante los días previos a la crucifixión de Jesús.
¿Qué podría tener que enseñarnos este Evangelio? Pedro, que era una persona muy humana, con debilidades y defectos, pecados y juicios erróneos, fue elegido por Jesús, creo, para hacernos saber que cada uno de nosotros es capaz, CON LA GRACIA DE DIOS, de proclamar las buenas nuevas que Jesús es "el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios vivo". Eso es lo que Pedro respondió cuando Jesús le preguntó: "¿Pero quién dices que soy?"
Todos podemos transformarnos cuando estamos dispuestos a cambiar para mejorar, acercarnos a Dios en nuestra vida diaria. Pero es el poder de Dios lo que nos permite esta conversión. Seamos agradecidos por la obra del Espíritu dentro de nosotros.
