Today’s gospel says that after everyone had been fed, 12 baskets of food remained. It is interesting to see that the leftovers are at the end; and it is never said that the crowds would be fed leftovers from the people who accompanied Jesus. In other words, generosity does not rely on having a lot to give. It is not so generous to give when you have excess. You can give from scarcity, and amazingly even miraculously, the effect is always overabundance. To give from what is left over has little merit or value. We have heard it regularly at each of our celebrations of the Liturgy on the weekend that THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS IS THAT GOD IS DEEPLY IN LOVE WITH US. Made in the image and likeness of God, which is love, we cannot live isolated. God IS love that communicates in his creation and his relationship with us. This is what we truly celebrate today. Isn’t it true that the mass media focuses much more on the BAD news than on the GOOD news? We seem to hear, think or say often that the world is bad, too. We know there is corruption, violence, wars, and problems even in our church. And sometimes we ourselves may be going through some rough times. So the negative influences around us are real. What keeps us standing and motivated to continue living and working? We as Christians are saved in HOPE. Above and beyond any evil, we know well that there is GOOD, BEAUTY, and TRUTH in Christ.
