Today is First Communion Sunday for the majority of our second graders. And for a few, it will be the following Sunday. Congratulations to them and their families today. They will receive the Body and Blood of Jesus in the form of Bread and Wine for the first !me. How special this day is for them, and so we celebrate the occasion with them. They become more a part of our worshipping community in this way and continue to grow to be more like Jesus, whom they receive.
The Gospel today tells us these words of Jesus: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does, he prunes so that it bears more fruit.” What a great reminder to all that we need to stay connected to our source of love and fruitfulness, Jesus. In the weeks ahead, all of our 2nd graders are invited to again come to the table of the Lord, and to receive Him again and again. Jesus wants us to be remain attached to Him, as a strong vine that grows and bears fruit. That fruit will be the love we share with our families and friends. It will be the way we reach out to those in need around us. It will be the way we treat our classmates and teachers.
We can imagine a strong vine coming from the altar at Mass, and branching out down all the aisles of church, all the way to the back of church and encircling each one of us who is present. God’s love and life in that vine brings life and love to each person. It reaches out to all, making us all a part of God’s wonderful gift. Let us celebrate the Eucharist often to keep alive the life and love we have. What a joy!

Hoy es Domingo de Primera Comunión para la mayoría de nuestros estudiantes de segundo grado. Y para unos, será el domingo siguiente. Felicitaciones a ellos y a sus familias hoy. Recibirán el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Jesús en forma de Pan y Vino por primera vez. Qué especial es este día para ellos, por eso celebramos la ocasión con ellos. De esta manera, se vuelven más parte de nuestra comunidad de adoración y con!núan creciendo para parecerse más a Jesús, a quien reciben. El Evangelio de hoy nos dice estas palabras de Jesús: “Yo soy la vid verdadera, y mi Padre es el viñador. Él quita en mí toda rama que no da fruto, y todo el que lo hace, lo poda para que dé más fruto”. Qué gran recordatorio para todos de que necesitamos estar conectados a nuestra fuente de amor y fecundidad, Jesús. En las próximas semanas, todos nuestros estudiantes de segundo grado están invitados a venir nuevamente a la mesa del Señor y recibirlo una y otra vez. Jesús quiere que estemos unidos a Él, como una vid fuerte que crece y da fruto. Ese fruto será el amor que compar!mos con nuestras familias y amigos. Será la forma en que nos acerquemos a los necesitados que nos rodean. Será la forma en que tratamos a nuestros compañeros y profesores. Podemos imaginar una enredadera fuerte saliendo del altar en la Misa, y ramificándose por todos los pasillos de la iglesia, hasta la parte trasera de la iglesia y rodeando a cada uno de los presentes. El amor y la vida de Dios en esa vid trae vida y amor a cada persona. Llega a todos, haciéndonos a todos parte del maravilloso regalo de Dios. Celebremos la Eucaris'a a menudo para mantener viva la vida y el amor que tenemos. ¡Que alegria!
