The Epiphany of the Lord
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Today we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord, more familiarly known as THREE KINGS DAY, or the Coming of the Magi. Epiphany is a word that means manifestation. Jesus is shown to or manifested to the world beyond Galilee, and the good news of his birth is taken by the Magi, or astrologers, to lands East of the region. They followed a star that guided them to the place where they found the Holy Family and offered gifts fit for a king to Jesus.
When you first hear this story you may think that if the Magi were expecting a king, someone to rescue them from foreign domination, they may have been disappointed. They found a newborn child, found in a manger for animals, and with poor parents. None of these seem to be a good reason for great joy after a long trip from their native land. But they found the salvation they were seeking. They had the light of manifestation, and they celebrated with great joy.
Perhaps there are times when we reject what we find because it does not appear God’s will would consist of something so apparently small, insignificant, and of little importance. Perhaps we need to ask for that radiant light that ensures us this is precisely where God can be found; in an unexpected event, in the care of a small child, someone vulnerable or sick, in an invitation or a call where we do good for someone else, or in giving the best of ourselves, like the Magi. The star of our vocation as Christians can often take us far.

¡FELIZ AÑO NUEVO! Hoy celebramos la Epifanía del Señor, más familiarmente conocida como el DÍA DE LOS TRES REYES, o la Venida de los Magos. Epifanía es una palabra que significa manifestación. Jesús se muestra o se manifiesta al mundo más allá de Galilea, y las buenas noticias de su nacimiento son llevadas por los magos, o astrólogos, a las tierras al este de la región. Siguieron a una estrella que los guío hasta el lugar donde encontraron a la Sagrada Familia y les ofrecieron regalos dignos de un rey para Jesús.
Cuando escuches esta historia por primera vez, puedes pensar que si los Magos esperaban un rey, alguien que los rescatara de la dominación extranjera, podrían haber estado decepcionados. Encontraron un niño recién nacido, encontrado en un pesebre para animales, y con padres pobres. Ninguno de estos parece ser un buen motivo de gran alegría después de un largo viaje desde su tierra natal. Pero encontraron la salvación que buscaban. Tenían la luz de la manifestación, y celebraban con gran alegría.
Quizás haya ocasiones en que rechacemos lo que encontramos porque no parece que la voluntad de Dios consistiría en algo aparentemente pequeño, insignificante y de poca importancia. Quizás necesitamos pedir esa luz radiante que nos asegura que aquí es donde se puede encontrar a Dios; en un evento inesperado; en el cuidado de un niño pequeño, alguien vulnerable o enfermo; en una invitación o una llamada donde hacemos el bien por otra persona, o al dar lo mejor de nosotros mismos, como los Reyes Magos. La estrella de nuestra vocación como cristianos a menudo puede llevarnos lejos.
