The Baptism of Jesus
Today we remember the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. Jesus begins a new phase of his life. He leaves everything: his carpenter’s workshop, home, family, and friends…to be totally at the service of the mission that was entrusted to him by his Heavenly Father: announcing the Good News of the Kingdom. He begins to live what he will later ask of his followers, of his disciples. This moment was the day in which his mission was publicly recognized as a response to his Father’s project…bringing freedom and forgiveness to all.
For us, baptism also represents the reality that we are the beloved children of God. This entails a great dignity and also a call to carry out the works of God, since we are his family. The works of God are all the actions---no matter how small--- of love, kindness, truth, caring for others, justice, responsibility, patience, and peace that are carried out throughout the day. Christians must be persons who, like Jesus, go through the world doing good. As we recognize ourselves as children of God, we accept the call of Baptism: to devote our life to the service of others, so all may be living members of God’s family. And this service brings happiness not only to others, but to ourselves, too.
Does our behavior reflect that we are a beloved child of God? Do we need to change how we speak and act in order to reflect that role? Do we need a fresh start in the New Year to be more aware of our Baptismal call?

Hoy recordamos el bautismo de Jesús en el río Jordán por Juan el Bautista. Jesús comienza una nueva fase de su vida. Lo deja todo: el taller de su carpinteria, el hogar, los amigos de la familia ... para estar totalmente al servicio de la misión que le encomendó su Padre Celestial: anunciar la Buena Nueva del Reino. Comienza a vivir lo que más tarde pedirá a sus seguidores, a sus discípulos. Este momento fue el día en que su misión fue reconocida públicamente como una respuesta al proyecto de su Padre ... trayendo libertad y perdón a todos.
Para nosotros, el bautismo también representa la realidad de que somos los hijos amados de Dios. Esto conlleva una gran dignidad y también un llamado a realizar las obras de Dios, ya que somos su familia. Las obras de Dios son todas las acciones, sin importar cuán pequeñas, de amor, bondad, verdad, cuidado de los demás, justicia, responsabilidad, paciencia y paz que se llevan a cabo a lo largo del día. Los cristianos deben ser personas que, como Jesús, recorran el mundo haciendo el bien. Al reconocernos a nosotros mismos como hijos de Dios, aceptamos el llamado del bautismo: dedicar nuestra vida al servicio de los demás, para que todos puedan ser miembros vivos de la familia de Dios. Y este servicio brinda felicidad no solo a los demás, sino también a nosotros mismos.
¿Refleja nuestro comportamiento que somos hijos amados de Dios? ¿Necesitamos cambiar la forma en que hablamos y actuamos para reflejar ese rol? ¿Necesitamos un nuevo comienzo en el Año Nuevo para estar más conscientes de nuestro llamado del Bautismo?
