We are all familiar with the characterization of someone as a “Good Samaritan”; a kind-hearted individual who helps his/her neighbor in need. But we are still taken aback when someone gives without limit and asks nothing in return. We get accustomed to paying for everything or being asked for something back.

The parable today reminds us that the person who reaches out to another in need is the one to be imitated, not the ones who may have a position of authority or even a title in religion but do not give good example of the goodness of God’s love through their generosity.

Here Jesus is putting into perspective our relationship with God. Much more important than the official worship and liturgy (although important) is the closeness of our brother or sister in need. Jesus moves away from the temple and invites us to live our relationship with God in our daily, routine encounter with our family and friends, with our neighbors, and even with strangers.

This is where our relationship with God takes place. It is only by loving in this way that we are able to say that we love God; because John wrote: “If anyone says ‘I love God,’ but hates his brother or sister, he is a liar.”(I John 4:20) Nothing more, nothing less. Do we approach our neighbor and show we care? Do we accompany them in their need? Are we Good Samaritans for others regardless of who they are, their race or background? Todos estamos familiarizados de quien es un "buen samaritano"; un individuo de buen corazón que ayuda a su vecino necesitado. Pero todavía estamos desconcertados cuando alguien da sin límite, y no pide nada a cambio. Nos acostumbramos a pagar por todo, o a que nos pidan algo a cambio.

La parábola de hoy nos recuerda que la persona que busca a otra persona necesitada es la que debe ser imitada, no la que puede tener una posición de autoridad, o incluso un título en religión, pero no da buen ejemplo de la bondad de El amor de Dios a través de su generosidad.

Aquí Jesús está poniendo en perspectiva nuestra relación con Dios. Mucho más importante que el culto oficial y la liturgia (aunque importante) es la cercanía de nuestro hermano o hermana en necesidad. Jesús se aleja del templo y nos invita a vivir nuestra relación con Dios en nuestro encuentro diario y rutinario con nuestra familia y amigos, con nuestros vecinos e incluso con extraños.

Aquí es donde tiene lugar nuestra relación con Dios. Sólo siendo amorosos de esta manera podemos decir que amamos a Dios; porque Juan escribió: "Si alguien dice 'amo a Dios', pero odia a su hermano o hermana, es un mentiroso". (I Juan 4:20) Nada más, nada menos. ¿Nos acercamos a nuestro vecino y mostramos que nos importa? ¿Los acompañamos en su necesidad? ¿Somos buenos samaritanos para otros sin importar quiénes son, su raza o antecedentes? Vamos a verlo y vivir el mensaje del Evangelio.
