We have a tendency to do what is comfortable, to seek what is easy, and unfortunately sometimes we view religion in the same way. We go to Mass on Saturday/Sunday - if there is time - and we are satisfied. Or we choose a messenger who does not challenge us to do things differently because we cannot be bothered, or it doesn’t fit our perspective. It is like throwing Jeremiah (1st reading) into the well: what he said was annoying, so he is simply removed.

We need to realize that if we call ourselves Christian, i.e. followers of Jesus, we must strive and work hard. There is no promise that things will be easy. Jesus was nailed to the cross. Would we have it any better? Jesus says today in the Gospel: “I have come to set the earth on fire.” He does not say that he will bring us comforts. No, Jesus seeks to change the world, and sometimes that causes pain and division.

There are times when we might be criticized or ridiculed for what we believe in. Peace will come later. First we have to make an effort; later the Kingdom will come. To obtain justice, we have to fight against injustice. To obtain love requires many acts of love and sacrifice.

Essentially, although Sunday Mass is very important to keep us on the right track, so, too, is Monday to Saturday. It is in our relationships with family, with coworkers, with friends, where living our faith may mean going against what is said and done around us. ARE WE UP TO IT? I believe we are, so let us have courage and give witness.

Tenemos una tendencia a hacer lo que es cómodo, para buscar lo que es fácil, y desafortunadamente a veces vemos la religión de la misma manera. Vamos a misa los sábados y domingos, si hay tiempo, y estamos satisfechos. O elegimos un mensajero que no nos desafía a hacer las cosas de manera diferente porque no podemos ser molestados, o no se ajusta a nuestra perspectiva. Es como arrojar a Jeremías (primera lectura) al pozo: lo que dijo fue molesto, por lo que simplemente se elimina.

Debemos darnos cuenta de que si nos llamamos cristianos, es decir, seguidores de Jesús, debemos esforzarnos y trabajar duro. No hay promesa de que las cosas sean fáciles. Jesús fue clavado en la cruz. ¿Lo tendríamos mejor? Jesús dice hoy en el Evangelio: “He venido a incendiar la tierra”. No dice que nos traerá comodidades. No, Jesús busca cambiar el mundo, y algunas veces eso causa dolor y división.

Hay ocasiones en que podemos ser criticados o ridiculizados por lo que creemos. La paz vendrá más tarde. Primero tenemos que hacer un esfuerzo; después vendrá el reino. Para obtener justicia, tenemos que luchar contra la injusticia. Para obtener amor, se requieren muchos actos de amor y sacrificio.

Esencialmente, aunque la misa del domingo es muy importante para mantenernos en el camino correcto, también es de lunes a sábado. Es en nuestras relaciones con la familia, en el trabajo, con amigos, donde vivir nuestra fe puede significar ir en contra de lo que se dice y se hace a nuestro alrededor. ¿Estamos a la altura? Creo que lo somos, así que tengamos valor y demos testimonio.
