The Gospel story today about the tax collector, Zacchaeus, is one of my favorites in Luke’s accounts of Jesus stories. The tax collector in Jesus’s times was not a very highly respected job, since he worked for the Romans, who extracted high taxes from all the Jewish nation, and because often the collector himself lined his own pockets by charging more than was asked. But Zacchaeus must have heard about Jesus and his miracles, so he really wanted to see him for himself.
Can you imagine the sight it must have been to see a grown adult sitting in a tree waiting to observe a passerby? It must have been a very funny scene. Don’t you think? And Zacchaeus was probably oblivious to the fact; he was intent on seeing Jesus. Had he known the effect of the incident, maybe he wouldn’t have done it. Not only did Jesus see him, but he invited himself to Zacchaeus’s home. And thus, the conversion of heart began, or maybe continued.
I think that this story reminds us all that Jesus can be present in so many varied places and in so many different situations. Sometimes we fall into the trap of just expecting God’s presence in “sacred” places or with “holy” persons. The truth is that we can find Jesus in EACH person we meet, and we can meet him whenever and wherever He wants to reveal himself. Jesus can touch us and others when we least expect it. Let us pray that we can be open to God’s mercy, just as Zacchaeus was, and be ready to respond generously with heart.

La historia del Evangelio de hoy sobre el recaudador de impuestos, Zaqueo, es una de mis favoritas en los relatos de Lucas sobre las historias de Jesús. El recaudador de impuestos en los tiempos de Jesús no era un trabajo muy respetado, ya que trabajaba para los romanos, que extraían altos impuestos a toda la nación judía, y porque a menudo el mismo recaudador se llenaba los bolsillos cobrando más de lo que se le pedía. Pero Zaqueo debe haber escuchado acerca de Jesús y sus milagros, por lo que realmente quería verlo por sí mismo.
¿Te imaginas la vista que debió haber sido ver a un adulto adulto sentado en un árbol esperando observar a un transeúnte? Debe haber sido una escena muy divertida, ¿no te parece? Y Zaqueo probablemente era ajeno al hecho; estaba decidido a ver a Jesús. Si hubiera sabido el efecto del incidente, tal vez no lo habría hecho. No Jesús solo lo vio, pero se invitó a la casa de Zaqueo. Y así, la conversión del corazón comenzó, o tal vez continuó.
Creo que esta historia nos recuerda a todos bien, que Jesús puede estar presente en tantos lugares variados y en muchas situaciones diferentes. Algunas veces caemos en la trampa de esperar la presencia de Dios en lugares "sagrados" o con personas "santas". La verdad es que podemos encontrar a Jesús en CADA persona que conocemos, y podemos encontrarnos con él cuando y donde quiera que se revele. Jesús puede tocarnos a nosotros y a otros cuando menos lo esperamos. Oremos para que podamos estar abiertos a la misericordia de Dios, tal como lo fue Zaqueo, y estar listos para responder generosamente con corazón.
