There is a real lesson for us to learn or re-learn with this feast of CHRIST, THE KING OF THE UNIVERSE. Although the Gospel story retells the story of Jesus on the Cross, not a likely picture of a king with power, it sets the stage for teaching us that his kingdom is the reign of God that brings together all the scattered children of the world into one family. Just as Jesus promises paradise to the thief, so he shows his power over especially the reign of sin and evil in this universe. And this Kingdom of God also has so much to give to us, too.
n God’s kingdom we are all brothers and sisters with God as our Father, and Jesus as our brother. It is in this kingdom that the fullness will be seen because it is realized from true fraternity, solidarity, and justice. As in a good family, we will all put our trust in the father in whom we find the love that leads to life. Without borders, divisions of race, culture, nationality or religion, all humanity is called to participate in this fullness. Jesus is the King of this reign; that is why he died on the cross.
Death on a cross was the most shameful form of punishment for anyone in Jesus’s time. Not only were the Romans ridding themselves of someone they thought might be a rebel, but the Jewish leaders were satisfied to be rid of him and his messages of love and forgiveness, preferring the strict law-keeping instead. But Jesus still manages to teach in those last moments that God’s kingdom is what we all need to strive toward and work to create. Let us echo the cry: “Long live Christ, the King.”

Hay una verdadera lección para que aprendamos o reaprendamos con esta fiesta de CRISTO, EL REY DE LA UNIVERSO. Aunque la historia evangélica relata la historia de Jesús en la Cruz, no una imagen probable de un rey con poder, establece el escenario para enseñarnos que su reino es el reinado de Dios que reúne a todos los hijos dispersos del mundo en una sola familia. Así como Jesús promete el paraíso al ladrón, así muestra su poder sobre especialmente el reinado del pecado y el mal en este universo. Y este Reino de Dios también tiene mucho que darnos a nosotros, también.
En el reino de Dios todos somos hermanos y hermanas con Dios como nuestro Padre, y Jesús como nuestro hermano. Es en este reino que la plenitud será vista porque se realiza desde la verdadera fraternidad, solidaridad y justicia. Como en una buena familia, todos pondremos nuestra confianza en el padre en quien encontramos el amor que conduce a la vida. Sin fronteras, divisiones de raza, cultura, nacionalidad o religión, toda la humanidad está llamada a participar en esta plenitud. Jesús es el Rey de este reinado; es por eso que murió en la cruz.
La muerte en una cruz era la forma más vergonzosa de castigo para cualquiera en la época de Jesús. No sólo los romanos se libraban de alguien que creían que podría ser un rebelde, sino que los líderes judíos estaban satisfechos de deshacerse de él y de sus mensajes de amor y perdón, prefiriendo el estricto cumplimiento de la ley en su lugar. Pero Jesús todavía logra enseñar en esos últimos momentos que el reino de Dios es lo que todos debemos esforzarnos y trabajar para crear. Hagamos eco del grito: "Viva Cristo, el Rey."
