The first disciples never considered being, as Jesus says, “fishers of men.” Being a fisher of men could seem similar to what today we call being a head hunter, that is, a person specialized in finding talent and bringing it into a company. Those who find talented folks get commissions; and those with talents are hired and often earn a lot of money.
Being a fisher of men is instead about love and a decision to the mission of Jesus. It does not bring in a lot of money nor any great monetary profit; and yet, from this work depends the whole future, our individual salvation, as well as the salvation of the world.
For the fishermen of Capernaum there is something very powerful that moves them to leave everything behind and become recruiters for Jesus. They decide to devote themselves to the great task of proclaiming the love and the Good News of the salvation of God. These fishermen met the living Christ and followed him, investing in him their whole future. And as a result, millions of people have been able to know and love God. Shouldn’t we, too, be about investing the best of ourselves for those results? Maybe 2020 can be the year in which we truly respond to the invitation of Jesus, to leave behind those things that enslave us or tie us down, preventing us from truly following Jesus. Let’s make that resolve NOW.

Los primeros discípulos nunca consideraron ser, como Jesús dice, "pescadores de hombres". Ser un pescador de hombres podría parecer similar a lo que hoy llamamos ser un cazador de cabezas que es una persona especializada en encontrar talento y llevarlo a una empresa. Aquellos que encuentran gente talentosa reciben comisiones; y aquellos con talento son contratados y a menudo ganan mucho dinero.
Ser un pescador de hombres se trata, en cambio, de amor y decisión para la misión de Jesús. No aporta mucho dinero ni grandes ganancias monetarias y, sin embargo, de este trabajo depende todo el futuro, nuestra salvación individual, así como la salvación del mundo.
Para los pescadores de Capernaum hay algo muy poderoso que los mueve a dejar todo atrás y convertirse en reclutadores de Jesús. Deciden dedicarse a la gran tarea de proclamar el amor y las Buenas Nuevas de la salvación de Dios. Estos pescadores se encontraron con el Cristo vivo y lo siguieron, invirtiendo en él todo su futuro. Y como resultado, millones de personas han podido conocer y amar a Dios. ¿No deberíamos también nosotros invertir lo mejor de nosotros mismos para obtener esos resultados? Quizás 2020 pueda ser el año en el que realmente respondamos a la invitación de Jesús, para dejar atrás aquellas cosas que nos esclavizan o nos atan, impidiéndonos seguir verdaderamente a Jesús. Hagamos esa resolución AHORA.
