Today is the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, 40 days after His birth. The presentation in Jerusalem is motivated by Jewish rituals of the law of Moses. After a woman gives birth to a son, she is impure for forty days. At the end of that period, she is to bring an offering to the temple, which the priest offers as a sacrifice, effecting her purification. In addition, the law states that every first-born male (which “opens the womb”), whether human or animal, “belongs” to the Lord, so first-born sons needed to be redeemed. The redemption involved the payment of five shekels to the priesthood. So Joseph and Mary are following the Jewish laws to the tee.

We might wonder how Simeon and Anna recognized Jesus. He looked like many other little babies who were brought to the temple. Luke tells us they were guided by the Holy Spirit, and they were holy people, close to God. And the closer we are to God, the more aware we are of God’s presence in our everyday lives. They saw with their hearts and minds. So that’s how they knew Jesus was the one they were waiting for.

Do we want to see what our eyes cannot see; do we want a greater awareness of God’s presence and his love? Do we want to see the goodness and holiness in ourselves and others? We can. The better we know God, the more visible He will be to us. Let us ask God to help us to recognize him better each day.

Después de que una mujer da a luz a un hijo, es impura durante cuarenta días. Al final de ese período, ella debe llevar una ofrenda al templo, que el sacerdote ofrece como sacrificio, efectuando su purificación. Y cuanto más cerca estamos de Dios, más conscientes somos de la presencia de Dios en nuestra vida cotidiana. Vieron con sus corazones y mentes. Así es como sabían que Jesús era el que estaban esperando.

¿Queremos ver lo que nuestros ojos no pueden ver; ¿queremos una mayor conciencia de la presencia de Dios y de su amor? ¿Queremos ver la bondad y la santidad en nosotros mismos y en los demás? Podemos. Cuanto mejor conozcamos a Dios, más visible será para nosotros. Pidamos a Dios que nos ayude a reconocerlo mejor cada día.
