Greetings From Sister Marlita/ Saludos de Sister Marlita

I read this quote recently in a church music magazine, and I thought it was worth sharing and reflecting upon with you.

“BY ITS VERY NATURE SONGS HAVE BOTH AN INDIVIDUAL AND A COMMUNAL DIMENSION. IT IS NO WONDER THAT SINGING TOGETHER IN CHURCH EXPRESSES SO WELL THE SACRAMENTAL PRESENCE OF GOD TO HIS PEOPLE.” (As stated by Fr. Paul Colloton, OS)

Each of us probably enjoys our particular kind of music to listen to, or even to sing along to (esp. in the car/shower when we are alone!) And that is not a surprise. But notice what the words above say…” singing together in church.” Whether we are in the pew or in the choir, whether we have a strong or weak voice, or little voice at all, when we come together for worship we are ONE as we sing together, and that brings God’s presence more real to us. Sacramental presence implies a SACRED quality, and we are all called to grow in holiness, to become more like Jesus. There are times we join as one in a hymn; there are times when we listen to a cantor or choir sing (Resp. Psalm or solo). But in each case, we are recalling that we are one with God and with each other.

Remember that performance is not normally our goal when we come to Mass and participate together. We join to pray together, to meet God present in our midst, and the whole assembly claims its voice by singing and praying together. Let us lift up our voices to breathe and sing as one body with each other and with God.

Pero en cada caso, estamos recordando que somos uno con Dios y con los demás.

Recuerde que el rendimiento normalmente no es nuestro objetivo cuando venimos a misa y participamos juntos. Nos unimos para orar juntos, para encontrarnos con Dios presente en medio de nosotros, y toda la asamblea reclama su voz cantando y orando juntos. Levantemos nuestras voces para respirar y cantar como un solo cuerpo entre nosotros y con Dios.
