Most of us are familiar with the portion of Matthew’s gospel entitled: The Sermon on the Mount…” Blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are the meek, blessed are those who mourn, etc. But today’s Gospel is the continuation of that special sermon, and Jesus selects the fifth, sixth, and eighth commandments to show us the central message of his new way of life.
To choose life in Christ means to pay attention not only to one’s actions, but more importantly, to their roots within our inner being, to the deep-down part of us. Life in Christ implies that our whole being needs transformation, starting within our very depths, and that is often where our bad, and even sinful habits can be found. For example, the fifth commandment says “You should not kill”, but Jesus says “whoever is angry with his brother or sister will be liable to judgment.” An out-of-control anger within us, if left unchecked, can lead to murder. We need to look at the roots of our actions and attitudes.
At the heart of both the Sermon on the Mount and the Ten Commandments is relationship. First, it is our relationship with God, and then with one another. When human dignity is respected and upheld, God is served. We are called to defend the human dignity of each individual and to respect each person because of his/her dignity that comes from our Creator. Let us pray that we never put our personal rights above anyone else’s.

La mayoría de nosotros estamos familiarizados con la parte del evangelio de Mateo titulada: El Sermón de la montaña ... "Bienaventurados los pobres en espíritu, ... bendecidos los mansos, ... benditos los que lloran, etc. Pero el Evangelio de hoy es la continuación de ese especial sermón, y Jesús selecciona los mandamientos quinto, sexto y octavo para mostrarnos el mensaje central de su nueva forma de vida.
Elegir la vida en Cristo significa prestar atención no solo a las acciones de uno, sino más importante, a sus raíces dentro de nuestro ser interior, a la parte más profunda de nosotros. La vida en Cristo implica que todo nuestro ser necesita transformación, comenzando dentro de nuestras profundidades, y ahí es donde a menudo se pueden encontrar nuestros hábitos malos e incluso pecaminosos. Por ejemplo, el quinto mandamiento dice "No debes matar", pero Jesús dice "quien esté enojado con su hermano o hermana será susceptible de juicio". Una ira descontrolada dentro de nosotros, si no se controla, puede conducir a asesinato. Necesitamos observar las raíces de nuestras acciones y actitudes.
En el corazón tanto del Sermón del Monte como de los Diez Mandamientos está la relación. Primero, es nuestra relación con Dios, y luego con los demás. Cuando se respeta y se respeta la dignidad humana, se sirve a Dios. Estamos llamados a defender la dignidad humana de cada individuo y a respetar a cada persona debido a su dignidad que proviene de nuestro Creador. Oremos para que nunca pongamos nuestros derechos personales por encima de los demás.
