Lent has begun and this liturgical season offers us a time to grow in the life of Jesus. Although we all are created as good, our humanity often goes in the opposite direction, because our Creator gave us the gift of free will. The truth is we often want to do things OUR way, and we get side-tracked. We are reminded in the first reading of our need for God’s grace and help.
But Jesus has won victory over sin and death through His Resurrection. This victory empowers us to overcome being cut off from God. It restores our relationship with God, just like God intended in the beginning.
Even Jesus was tempted after 40 days in the desert, and the Gospel tells us about that experience for him. But unlike the people of Israel, Jesus remained faithful to His Father’s will and his mission. He refused Satan’s temptations mainly because he was looking beyond himself. Jesus acted with faith and hope and brought salvation to us all.
So the Lenten journey invites us to pause in the rush of life, and examine how our relationship with God is progressing. Are we listening to our heart/mind to be and do good in the moments of our day? Are we taking time to read or reflect upon God’s Word? Are we responding to the many ways that the needs of others call us to reach out and listen? Or are we selfish and only concerned about US, and our desires? Are we willing to change when we see a greater good? Let us pray for one another that the 40 days journey can be a fruitful one for us.

La Cuaresma ha comenzado y esta temporada litúrgica nos ofrece un tiempo para crecer en la vida de Jesús. Aunque todos somos creados como buenos, nuestra humanidad a menudo va en la dirección opuesta, porque nuestro Creador nos dio el don del libre albedrío. La verdad es que a menudo queremos hacer las cosas a NUESTRA manera, y nos desviamos. En la primera lectura se nos recuerda sobre nuestra necesidad de la gracia y la ayuda de Dios.
Pero Jesús ha ganado la victoria sobre el pecado y la muerte a través de su resurrección. Esta victoria nos da poder para vencer el estar separados de Dios. Restaura nuestra relación con Dios, tal como Dios pretendía en el principio.
Incluso Jesús fue tentado después de 40 días en el desierto, y el Evangelio nos cuenta sobre esa experiencia para él. Pero a diferencia del pueblo de Israel, Jesús se mantuvo fiel a la voluntad de su Padre y su misión. Rechazó las tentaciones de Satanás principalmente porque estaba mirando más allá de sí mismo. Jesús actuó con fe y esperanza, y nos trajo la salvación a todos.
Entonces, el viaje de Cuaresma nos invita a hacer una pausa en la carrera de la vida, y examinar cómo está progresando nuestra relación con Dios. ¿Estamos escuchando a nuestro corazón, mente, nuetro ser y hacer el bien en los momentos de nuestro día? ¿Nos estamos tomando tiempo para leer o reflexionar sobre la Palabra de Dios? ¿Estamos respondiendo a las muchas formas en que las necesidades de los demás nos llaman a extender la mano y escuchar? ¿O somos egoístas y solo estamos preocupados por nosotros y nuestros deseos? ¿Estamos dispuestos a cambiar cuando vemos un bien mayor? Oremos los unos por los otros para que el viaje de 40 días pueda ser fructífero para nosotros.
