Have you ever heard that “Our God is a God of surprises”? The readings this week help us see that truth in a variety of ways. It is very evident in our first reading where God directs the anointing of a new King of the Israelites. Samuel, the prophet, goes to Bethlehem to anoint one of Jesse’s 8 sons as king, but instead of the oldest, the youngest is chosen, even though he is still a shepherd boy. This would not have been very usual. The people of God were not convinced it was the best choice.

Then in the Gospel, Jesus noticed a man blind from birth, so he smeared clay on his eyes, directed him to wash to be able to see, and then went looking for him when he heard that the Pharisees had rejected the man. Jesus found him and guided him to faith in God. We don’t often encounter Jesus going after someone he has cured, but here he is, wanting the man to have more than physical sight. He wished for him to believe in God’s love and care. It did not matter that he was blind from birth; the amazing thing was that Jesus drew him into the faith he came to profess, much to the demise of the Jewish leaders.

When have we struggled to see a person as God sees and not as we see? How do we as members of our faith community help others to see that God is at work in the world? Is there some conflict or issue in our lives where we need to ask God for sight? Let us pray this Lenten season to be given eyes to be surprised by God, and courage to give witness to it.

¿Alguna vez has escuchado que "Nuestro Dios es un Dios de sorpresas"? Las lecturas de esta semana nos ayudan a ver esa verdad de varias maneras. Es muy evidente en nuestra primera lectura donde Dios dirige la unción de un nuevo Rey de los israelitas. Samuel, el profeta, va a Belén para ungir a uno de los 8 hijos de Jesé como rey, pero en lugar del mayor, se elige al menor, a pesar de que todavía es un pastor. Esto no hubiera sido muy habitual. El pueblo de Dios no estaba convencido de que fuera la mejor opción.

Luego, en el Evangelio, Jesús notó a un hombre ciego de nacimiento, por lo que se untó la arcilla en los ojos, le ordenó que se lavara para poder ver, y luego fue a buscarlo cuando escuchó que los fariseos habían rechazado al hombre. Jesús lo encontró y lo guió a la fe en Dios. No solemos encontrar a Jesús yendo tras alguien que ha curado, pero aquí está, queriendo que el hombre tenga más que visión física. Deseaba que creyera en el amor y el cuidado de Dios. No importaba que fuera ciego de nacimiento; Lo sorprendente fue que Jesús lo atrajo a la fe que llegó a profesar, para la desaparición de los líderes judíos.

¿Cuándo hemos luchado para ver a una persona como Dios ve, y no como vemos? ¿Cómo nosotros, como miembros de nuestra comunidad de fe, ayudamos a otros a ver que Dios está trabajando en el mundo? ¿Hay algún conflicto o problema en nuestras vidas donde necesitamos pedirle a Dios que nos vea? Oremos en esta temporada de Cuaresma para que tengamos ojos para ser sorprendidos por Dios, y coraje para dar testimonio de ello.
