Today we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus. It recalls that Jesus after his resurrection returned to his Father in heaven, and promised to send the Holy Spirit to his followers to be with them until the end of time. Now that is some promise!
We have two different presentations of the Ascension in the New Testament. One in the Gospel of Matthew we heard today and the other is in the Acts of the Apostles, the book that tells stories of the primitive church after the Resurrection of Jesus. This is our first reading today. His followers were still waiting for the restoring of the Kingdom of Israel, not understanding yet what the Kingdom of Jesus truly meant. We feel the same way occasionally.
There may be times when we fail in grasping clearly who we are to be in this life also. Maybe events, like corona viruses and any unplanned circumstances, throw us for a loop, so to speak. Jesus wants us to recall that there is power in the Word Jesus came to preach. We here in the Gospel: “May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance among the holy ones…” Jesus wishes that we see with the eyes of faith, so that his power can be active in us.
Yes, he left us physically, but HE LIVES within us actively to be our constant companion in all we are, in all we say, and in all we do! Let us pray that, indeed, the eyes of our hearts be opened and ready to be persons of HOPE. This is not putting on a happy face; it is living that hope in our reality. Let us live in trust and hope in Jesus.

Hoy celebramos la Ascensión de Jesús. Recuerda que Jesús después de su resurrección regresó a su Padre en el cielo y prometió enviar el Espíritu Santo a sus seguidores para estar con ellos hasta el final de los tiempos. Ahora que es una promesa!
Tenemos dos presentaciones diferentes de la Ascensión en el Nuevo Testamento. Uno en el Evangelio de Mateo que escuchamos hoy, y el otro está en Hechos de los Apóstoles, el libro que cuenta historias de la iglesia primitiva después de la Resurrección de Jesús. Esta es nuestra primera lectura hoy. Sus seguidores todavía estaban esperando la restauración del Reino de Israel, sin entender aún lo que realmente significaba el Reino de Jesús. Sentimos lo mismo de vez en cuando. Puede haber ocasiones en las que no podamos comprender claramente quiénes somos en esta vida también. Tal vez los eventos, como el corona virus y cualquier circunstancia no planificada, nos lleven a un bucle, por así decirlo. Jesús quiere que recordemos que hay poder en la Palabra que Jesús vino a predicar. Aquí en el Evangelio: "Que se iluminen los ojos de sus corazones, para que sepan cuál es la esperanza que pertenece a su llamado, cuáles son las riquezas de gloria en su herencia entre los santos ..." Jesús desea que veamos con los ojos de la fe, para que su poder pueda estar activo en nosotros.
¡Sí, nos dejó físicamente, pero VIVE dentro de nosotros activamente para ser nuestro compañero constante en todo lo que somos, en todo lo que decimos y en todo lo que hacemos! Oremos para que, de hecho, los ojos de nuestros corazones se abran y estén listos para ser personas de ESPERANZA. Esto no es poner una cara feliz; es vivir esa esperanza en nuestra realidad. Vivamos en confianza y esperanza en Jesús.
