Greetings from Sister Marlita /Saludos de Sister Marlita

Some of you may be familiar with Franciscan Richard Rohr. I found this from among his writings recently: “The Gospel is not about being nice; it is about being honest and just, and the world doesn’t like those two things very much. Our job is to learn how to be honest, but with love and respect. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. taught us that before we go out to witness for justice, we have to make sure that we can love and respect those with whom we disagree.”

I believe that those two qualities, being honest and just, are both qualities that are o"en missing from the world in general, and from even among us who profess to be Chris!ans, in particular. Somewhere we have too easily fallen into stretching the truth when relating with others, so that we “look better” than we some!mes are. Or in order to “get ahead”, we easily fabricate the truth about ourselves. Respect for ALL persons, no ma#er who they are, demands that we treat them justly. We do not have to have the same opinion about things in order to respect them; but we do need to recognize each one’s dignity and worth as a created by God.

May we examine ourselves this week to see how honest and just we are in word and deed. It is not always easy, but we are called to mirror Jesus, as his followers; Jesus never compromised the truth and always treated others justly.
