Today’s Gospel is perfectly !med for this Sunday in that Jesus appeared on Easter to the Apostles, and then appeared again on the following Sunday. Thomas, our patron, was not there for the first appearance, and he didn’t want to believe anyone else about having seen Jesus, because he had not been there. So Jesus accommodated Thomas, and he exclaims “My Lord and My God!” when he saw Jesus’ hands and feet. This was Thomas’ faith speaking, knowing that to have risen from the dead had to have been of God. It was not a human act.

Jesus’ resurrection is the preview of what God has planned for all of us who believe in Jesus. Our Christian faith tells us there is life eternal with Jesus and with each other in God. Even modern psychology has done much study on neardeath experiences. These studies show that there is a lot to look forward to on the other side when our life in this world comes to an end.

This Sunday is known as Divine Mercy Sunday. Jesus forgave sins and now the Apostles could do it by the power of Jesus and in his name. The word “mercy” means God is reaching out to save us, to lead us by his grace to the kingdom of heaven. But we must respond in love. If we choose not to respond, God’s mercy cannot save us for it cannot change us. We thus condemn ourselves. We must learn to forgive ourselves, too. Then, we can come to the peace that Jesus wants to give us. Humility is to accept ourselves as we are and try to do better in the future.

Let us pray for one another that we can truly know God’s mercy and that we can also extend that mercy to others.

El Evangelio de hoy está perfectamente sincronizado para este domingo, ya que Jesús se apareció a los Apóstoles en Pascua y luego apareció de nuevo el domingo siguiente. Tomás, nuestro patrón, no estaba allí por primera vez, y no quería creerle a nadie más acerca de haber visto a Jesús, porque él no había estado allí. Entonces Jesús acomodó a Tomás, y él exclama: "¡Señor mío y Dios mío!" cuando vio las manos y los pies de Jesús. Esta fue la fe de Tomás hablando, sabiendo que para haber resucitado de entre los muertos tenía que haber sido de Dios. No fue un acto humano.

La resurrección de Jesús es la vista previa de lo que Dios ha planeado para todos los que creemos en Jesús. Nuestra fe cris!ana nos dice que hay vida eterna con Jesús y entre nosotros en Dios. Incluso la psicología moderna ha estudiado mucho las experiencias cercanas a la muerte. Estos estudios muestran que hay mucho que esperar del otro lado cuando nuestra vida en este mundo llegue a su fin.

Este domingo se conoce como Domingo de la Divina Misericordia. Jesús perdonó los pecados y ahora los Apóstoles podían hacerlo por el poder de Jesús y en su nombre. La palabra “misericordia” significa que Dios está extendiéndose para salvarnos, para llevarnos por su gracia al reino de los cielos. Pero debemos responder con amor. Si elegimos no responder, la misericordia de Dios no puede salvarnos porque no puede cambiarnos. Por tanto, nos condenamos a nosotros mismos. También debemos aprender a perdonarnos a nosotros mismos. Entonces, podemos llegar a la paz que Jesús quiere darnos. La humildad es aceptarnos a nosotros mismos como somos y tratar de hacerlo mejor en el futuro.

Oremos unos por otros para que podamos conocer verdaderamente la misericordia de Dios y que también podamos extender esa misericordia a los demás.
