Here we are on the last Sunday of Ordinary time for many weeks to come. This week we have Ash Wednesday, and the Lenten season begins anew for 2020. We will only return to Ordinary time after the Easter season.
The message of Jesus to us today is: “Be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
Now if that is not a real challenge, I do not know what is. To be perfect is the same as to “be holy.” Holiness means that an individual is undivided in their interior and their exterior lives. Holiness is NOT the attitude that we are better or “holier” than someone else. It is not that we walk around with an imaginary halo above our heads, or that we can do no wrong. Because we are human, the tendency to be selfish, or think we are better than the next one, will always be present.
To be holy means that we rise above insults we might receive; that we go beyond a violent reaction toward someone who wrongs us; that we avoid retaliating when a person humiliates us. We take Jesus as the example of one who is HOLY, i.e., one who follows the promptings of the Spirit and reaches out to the marginalized, or seeks out the rejected, or helps carry the burden of someone suffering. Jesus, “the Word, became flesh to be our model of holiness, “our Catholic Catechism states. May we strive to imitate our Lord and Master, doing the same.

Aquí estamos el último domingo del tiempo ordinario durante muchas semanas por venir. Esta semana tendremos el Miércoles de Ceniza, y la temporada de Cuaresma comienza de nuevo para 2020. Solo volveremos al tiempo ordinario después de la temporada de Pascua.
El mensaje de Jesús para nosotros hoy es: “Sé perfecto, así como tu Padre celestial es perfecto.”
Ahora, si eso no es un verdadero desafío, no sé lo que es. Ser perfecto es lo mismo que "ser santo". La santidad significa que un individuo no está dividido en su vida interior y exterior. La santidad NO es la actitud de que somos mejores o "más santos" que otra persona. No es que caminemos con un halo imaginario sobre nuestras cabezas, o que no podamos hacer nada malo. Debido a que somos humanos, la tendencia a ser egoístas, o pensar que somos mejores que el próximo, siempre estará presente.
Ser santo significa que nos elevamos por encima de los insultos que podríamos recibir; que vamos más allá de una reacción violenta hacia alguien que nos hace daño; que evitemos tomar represalias cuando una persona nos humilla. Tomamos a Jesús como el ejemplo de alguien que es SANTO, es decir, uno que sigue los impulsos del Espíritu y se acerca a los marginados, o busca a los rechazados, o ayuda a llevar la carga de alguien que sufre. Jesús, "la Palabra, se hizo carne para ser nuestro modelo de santidad", afirma nuestro Catecismo Católico. Que nos esforcemos por imitar a nuestro Señor y Maestro, haciendo lo mismo.
