We do not hear much about the devil except in jokes. There are many references to the devil as being behind the evil that exists in the world, but often those references are made light of, (“The Devil made me do it!”) and few take them seriously. But the fact is the devil is NOT a joke. There are evil forces and powers at work in the world, trying to undermine the message of love and forgiveness that Jesus preached.
In today’s Gospel we encounter a man in the synagogue with an evil or unclean spirit. And this man defies Jesus and derides him. But Jesus confronts this evil spirit and tells him to be quiet, and to leave the man. This all happens miraculously, and the people are astonished and amazed. I think we would have been also awed at such a happening. The point is that the power of Jesus was other than a human power to be able to cleanse this man. It pointed to the divine nature that was also a part of this person, Jesus.
Maybe this story is a good reminder to each of us that we need to be better aware of the works of the devil today. We often overlook his strategies, because he works subtly. Evil spirits approach us from where we are the weakest. We call this temptation. But with the help of God we can resist urges to anger, hatred, envy, laziness, pride, lust, greed, gluttony, etc. There is one stronger than the devil. The Holy One of God, Jesus, can help us overcome any tendencies to do evil. Let us call upon Him. He is our strength!

No escuchamos mucho sobre el diablo excepto en bromas. Hay muchas referencias al diablo como detrás del mal que existe en el mundo, pero a menudo esas referencias se toman a la ligera (“¡El diablo me obligó a hacerlo!”) Y pocos las toman en serio. Pero el hecho es que el diablo NO es una broma. Hay fuerzas y poderes malignos trabajando en el mundo, tratando de socavar el mensaje de amor y perdón que predicó Jesús.
En el evangelio de hoy encontramos a un hombre en la sinagoga con un espíritu maligno o inmundo. Y este hombre desa&a a Jesús y se burla de él. Pero Jesús se enfrenta a este espíritu maligno y le dice que se calle y deje al hombre. Todo esto sucede milagrosamente y la gente está asombrada y asombrada. Creo que también nos habría asombrado que sucediera algo así. El punto es que el poder de Jesús no era un poder humano para poder limpiar a este hombre. Apuntó a la naturaleza divina que también era parte de esta persona, Jesús.
Quizás esta historia sea un buen recordatorio para cada uno de nosotros de que debemos estar más conscientes de las obras del diablo hoy. A menudo pasamos por alto sus estrategias, porque trabaja su%lmente. Los espíritus malignos se acercan a nosotros desde donde somos los más débiles. A esto lo llamamos tentación. Pero con la ayuda de Dios podemos resis%r los impulsos de la ira, el odio, la envidia, la pereza, el orgullo, la lujuria, la codicia, la glotonería, etc. Hay uno más fuerte que el diablo. El Santo de Dios, Jesús, puede ayudarnos a superar cualquier tendencia a hacer el mal. Invoquémoslo. ¡Él es nuestra fuerza!
