The Lenten season invites us to reconsider how we are living our Christian lives. We hear in the Gospel today the story of Jesus cleansing the temple. He was upset with those in the outer court of the temple, who were taking advantage of the people, especially of the poor.
Jesus signed his death warrant when he cast the money changers out of the temple. He stood up for the truth about God and about religion and the poor, as the business people of the temple were exploiting the poor with high prices. Lent gives us new insights into how Jesus lived his life, always within the shadow of his death. Even this scene at the start of John’s gospel has us remembering that this would lead him to death and to glory. The glory of God here is Jesus fully alive to the exploitation of the poor, the mistreatment of the house of God, and fully alive to the faith that was beginning to grow in his disciples.
We are invited each Lenten season to take a serious look at our own lives, to check out what are our priorities, and to “cast out” anything that distracts us from living a bit closer to God. That is not always easy because we get attached to habits, and some of those habits are not the best. Let us pray and reflect upon how we can cleanse our temple, ourselves, of all that is not of God. El !empo de Cuaresma nos invita a reconsiderar cómo estamos viviendo nuestra vida cris!ana. Hoy escuchamos en el Evangelio la historia de Jesús limpiando el templo. Estaba molesto con los que estaban en el pa!o exterior del templo, que se estaban aprovechando de la gente, especialmente de los pobres.
Jesús firmó su sentencia de muerte cuando echó a los cambistas del templo. Defendió la verdad sobre Dios, la religión y los pobres, ya que la gente de negocios del templo explotaba a los pobres con precios elevados. La Cuaresma nos da una nueva perspec!va de cómo Jesús vivió su vida, siempre a la sombra de su muerte. Incluso esta escena al comienzo del evangelio de Juan nos hace recordar que esto lo llevaría a la muerte y a la gloria. La gloria de Dios aquí es Jesús plenamente vivo ante la explotación de los pobres, el maltrato de la casa de Dios y plenamente vivo ante la fe que comenzaba a crecer en sus discípulos.
Se nos invita cada temporada de Cuaresma a analizar seriamente nuestras propias vidas, a ver cuáles son nuestras prioridades y a “desechar” cualquier cosa que nos distraiga de vivir un poco más cerca de Dios. Eso no siempre es fácil porque nos apegamos a los hábitos, y algunos de esos hábitos no son los mejores. Oremos y reflexionemos sobre cómo podemos limpiar nuestro templo, nosotros mismos, de todo lo que no es de Dios. ¡Feliz Cuaresma!
